Evaluate Yourself In Peoples’ Eyes If You Want To Progress

7 habits

We humans are unique and gifted animals. We can judge where we are in most of the cases. We can find out if we are feeling good today and if we are not, we can plan about what we should do with respect to it. We are self aware creatures and we can use our self awareness to judge ourselves. We are animals who think for themselves and that is why we can plan and improve in the areas we are not doing so well. As people, it is natural for us to always want to do better than what we have been doing.

Somebody who wants to progress, needs to understand where he or she is before starting to work on growth. The first rule when you want to progress is to measure yourself! Unless you know where you started, how would you know if you are progressing? Measuring is the first step towards progress.

Most of the time we try to judge ourselves in the eyes of others. We try to understand how people find us so that we can improve in their eyes.

In fact, what has helped me more often than not is measuring myself on various areas in life and then deciding the area to improve. What I usually do is judge where I’m standing in the eyes of people around and decide what would help me grow better.

“She can always convince the customer”

“He will always close the sale”

“He is a fight-monger”

Such statements help you realize how people judge you. If I get to hear “You are always late”, it tells me that I need to work on my time commitments.

It is not only about your manager’s feedback. Yes, your manager’s feedback is important to assess yourself, but keeping your ears and mind open opens up a number of opportunities for you to grow in the areas which will be appreciated by people around you.

If your stakeholders feel that issue management on your projects is tardy, take that feedback as an opportunity to improve. Decide what issue management process you will follow on your next project. Manage, log, communicate and close your issues well. It will help you close your project well and grow rapidly in your career.

The feedback is not necessarily formal feedback everytime. It could be informally given to you, you may be able to deduce it from an email from your boss or maybe you just observed your team’s body language and realized that they are not really clear about the project’s goal. Now, if your team is not clear about your project’s goals, what do you need to improve? You need to improve your communication and plan a better interaction with your team rather than assuming that they just know it!

If my team does not come to me with their problems, that might mean that they are not open to me. What does this feedback mean? I need to encourage them to be open. No direct order is going to do it. If I ensure that I regularly spend some time with them where we discuss things other than today’s work, or involve my team in some team activities that will help them bond professionally, I will gradually win their trust. If i win their trust, motivating them for the work or encouraging them will be easier

Keep you ears open, listen actively to people around you and you will get ample feedback that will help you find out areas to grow.
