The Keyword here is UNDERSTAND. Reading and understanding is important for a project manager.The standard is compilation of experience and understanding of managing projects most effectively.
You Do NOT need to memorize anything whatsoever from the PMBOK® Guide, if you understand it. If you are able to understand it and apply it to your project, you can manage the projects better. Passing the exam is an additional benefit.
I agree with you that the standard is not lucid! In fact, it is very drab and dry. Remember, it is a standard. Not a novel! But then, you will say, ok, if the language is so dry and drab, how do we understand it in the first place? You are right. The language makes it difficult to understand. What do you do about it?
There is a simple trick to it. Go through the video recording for that chapter. Listen to the examples. Preferably, think of similar examples from your experience. Now, read the standard with that example in mind and you will not find it so very dry or drab! There you go! Read and understand the PMBOK® Guide clearly and you are on your way to pass the PMP® Exam and be an effective project manager
